Status and Development of Hydrogen Energy

Hydrogen energy is a high-quality secondary energy source with the most sustainable development potential. Similar to electricity, hydrogen energy must be converted from primary energy sources and cannot be directly extracted like coal, petroleum, or natural gas. It transforms energy carriers from non-renewable natural resources into manufacturable energy. As an industrial product, hydrogen energy is an ideal choice for large-scale, long-term energy storage, providing solutions for the large-scale integration of renewable energy and enabling cross-sectoral and cross-regional energy redistribution.

Based on production sources and carbon emissions during production, hydrogen is categorized into gray, blue, and green hydrogen. Currently, over 98% of global hydrogen production consists of gray hydrogen, blue hydrogen, and by-product hydrogen. Gray hydrogen production emits significant CO2, while green hydrogen – produced with zero emissions through renewable energy integration – is expected to gradually replace gray hydrogen as the dominant form.

Green hydrogen, also known as "renewable hydrogen," is produced via renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydro, etc.). Compared to fossil fuel-based hydrogen production, its environmentally friendly process emits no CO2 or pollutants, making it one of the most promising clean energy carriers.
